DACIA

Coin of Dacia          The province of Dacia existed from 106 until 271 A.D. It did not include all the territories inhabited by the Dacians. Crisana, Maramures, Northern and Central Moldova are still inhabited by the free Dacians. Trajan stayed in Dacia until 107 to organize the new territory. In 108 the capital of the province, Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa, was founded.
By the end of the 4th century A.D. the Dniester-Carpathian lands were conquered by Hun tribes, which completely devastated the region and the country became deserted. At the beginning of the 6th century A.D. the Slavic tribes of the Sclavins and Ants began to settle there, and later the Tiverts and Uliches.
To satisfy the need of Legions V and XIII in Dacia coins ranging in date from Philips to Gallienus were struck.
